Breakout and late sessions proposals

Well, the conference is in full swing, sessions have been proposed and are being voted on right now. But what if you arrived late, or a great idea comes to you later on? Here's what we suggest:

  • Get a post it, write it down and put it up on the BIG WINDOW
  • Write a time for it to happen
  • Tweet about it, tell people about it get interest in it
  • Have a breakout in the open space
  • *or* co-ordinate to join with or swap space with a scheduled session if the facilitator of that session agrees to it. Remember ASK FIRST.

As always this is your conference, we aren't here to tell you how to run it.

Take your iOS app polish to the next level with Allen Pike

We caught up with Allen Pike of Steamclock Software to hear what he had to add about his upcoming tutorial on Advanced UI for iOS at Polyglot:

"Moreso than any other platform, the user interface is key to making your apps succeed on iOS. Unfortunately, most developers on iOS are busy with the backends and the "glue" code necessary to get apps working, and don't always have the time to learn the newer or more advanced APIs that can make your app really shine.

As iOS 7 is now almost here, it's perfect time to visit those new features that require iOS 6 or even iOS 5 that are now so widely available that we can depend on them: Auto Layout, Collection Views, and theming. Of course, it's always good to have more exposure to advanced tips and tricks, so we'll also touch on view animations and scrolling performance: two of the topics that most frequently trip up intermediate iOS folks working on the view layer. Hope to see you there the morning of Friday, May 24th."

Want to Avoid Legacy Software Nightmares?

In Cliff's tutorial, Practical Software Architecture, we'll look at the mistakes of the Object Oriented Programming paradigm and how to avoid them using ideas from SOLID Principles, DCI architecture, CQRS, and Event Sourcing. The focus will be on tackling the practical points of each of these newer techniques and not slavish adherence to their rhetoric; so come prepared to use your noggin. We'll talk about how good architecture allows us to organize a project around shipping, and thus reacting, quickly. We will walk through an example to demonstrate how you can use these ideas in developing and deploying online applications. If you want to become a better developer this is a great opportunity to learn more about how to structure your software.

Annoucing the HTML5 Games Workshop

We are very excited to have Microsoft both sponsoring and organizing a day long HTML5 games workshop (trust us, we're most excited that they're organizing it instead of us) on Sunday May 26th. Tomas Lewis will be showing you how to create rich, interactive HTML5 based games in the browser and then taking you all the way, migrating your awesome game to Windows 8 and putting it up in the Windows app store.

(So how much would you pay for all this awesomesauce? $999.99 right? Well, what if I told you only $99.99? But we can do even better. Yes, if you act right now it's available for the low, low, very low price of $9.99 (rounded to the nearest whole dollar plus fees). What's that you say? That's waaaay too cheap? Fine. they'll throw in a catered lunch from Nuba too. Nothing's ever good enough for you people.
